Hi! And thanks for flying with us!!...oops I mean following our 2010 World flight blog! I'm Andrew Harrison, more commonly know these days as 'Granville' for no other reason except hulking great big boxes full of grocery items for over ten years whilst working in a shop!! :)
I too am looking forward to the upcoming event immensely now that is looming very large on the horizon, as it is now only less than 4 days away! However despite this our event is going to be especially intense this year as we are down to only 8 pilots myself included for the entire event! That's only half the crew of the main Australian team in Sydney!
The 8 of us will have to be 'paired up' and crew a Boeing 747 on 45 separate flights, covering more than 36,000 nautical miles - AND we will be flying 24/7 for the whole week with only an hour turnaround between each leg!! Talk about intensity! :)
This year I am flying as one of the full time crew-members, so I will be restored on 14 flights out of the total, with my first being flight 1002 on Monday morning at 03:50 am! This flight will be out of Nadi in Fiji and goes non-stop to Honolulu in Hawaii, and is the longest of all the legs being almost 3000 miles and very nearly 7 hours! Most of the other flights, excepting the oceanic crossings, will be in the region of 2-3 hours!
Also later on in the event, I will be flying the first flight into South America as we fly from Panama City to Quito, Ecuador! This airport has an elevation of over 9,000 feet so like La Paz that Roddy mentioned it is also affected by the same issues, but with the added problem of being smack bang in the middle of the city and having high mountains all around! Should be very interesting! You can view a video of an approach into Quito on this page!
Well I think I'll sign off for now as I don't want to ramble on forever!! What I would say however, is many thanks for following us around the world and please support us by donating to the Warwickshire & Northants Air Ambulance! Every little helps as they say at Tesco's to helping them save peoples lives!
I'll be getting back to you a little later, but for now just sit back, relax and enjoy World flight 2010!
